DSquared2 founders Dean and Dan Caten are identical twins who were raised in Toronto, Ontario. The two moved to New York to study fashion at Parsons The New School for Design for one semester in 1983 before returning home to start their own line in 1986, DEanDAN. As the two worked toward finding the perfect look for the line, they moved to Milan, Italy, and worked as designers for Gianni Versace and Diesel. This led to a Diesel-sponsored men's collection being released in 1994 and a women's and men's underwear collection in 2003. Before the first flagship store opened under the updated DSquared2 name, the two brothers maintained a prominent profile by staging creative and high-energy fashion shows with celebrities such as Christina Aguilera, Rihanna and Tokio Hotel's Bill Kaulitz appearing from the sky in a caged elevator. Celebrities such as Madonna, Lenny Kravitz, Nicolas Cage, Ricky Martin and Justin Timberlake are fans of the brother's designs, and the pair has often been commissioned to design pieces for various world tours. By the time the first DSquared2 flagship store opened in 2007, the Catens had already received the 2003 GQ Men of the Year Breakout Design Award and the 2006 Golden Needle. In 2009, the brothers were given a star on Canada's Walk of Fame. The first DSquared2 fragrance, He Wood, arrived in 2007; She Wood for women appeared shortly after. The pair's fragrance line is created in collaboration with perfumers such as Alberto Morillas, Annick Menardo and Christine Nagel.
